Supporting custom post types in Power Widgets has been always high on our features list. We’ve came to the stage where we are comfortable enough with Theme Importer, and started to push our new user interface. So now it’s time to start launching the new big changes to Power Widgets. Version 1.6.9 has launched. It’s a big change both in user interface and features. As promised, we are moving toward complete integration of custom posts types and custom taxonomy. This will ensure broader compatibility as many installations include themes and plugins with these types of customization.

Supporting Custom Post Types

Custom post types are a powerful way to extend your site’s functionality and design. They may be generated using plugins or themes. Additionally, turning WordPress into an Ecommerce platform relies heavily on this feature: products are actually a custom post types which include the necessary functionality to showcase the products. Bearing in mind that Power Widgets should be able to allow you to customize these custom post types, this version will have the first step. Power Widgets 1.6.9 will automatically identify any custom post types on your site and allow you to assign custom sidebars to default widget areas from the central table as well as from the page, just like any other page or post.

WooCommerce Compatible

As a byproduct of this feature, Power Widgets now supports WooCommerce integration and allows you to customize product’s sidebars in the same manner you’d do it on a given page or post. Coming up Next: Custom Taxonomy Support Currently, it is not yet possible to customize custom taxonomies’ sidebars, but we intend to add it in the near future. Once added, you’ll be able to customize, for example, the product’s category front page while using WooCommerce.

Simplified User Interface

We’ve combined all replacements into a single tab (called Replacements). Once you open this tab, you’ll find an in page tabbed navigation to pages, posts, categories, tags, default page templates, patterns and the new comer – custom post types.

The new interface is simple to understand, easier to navigate and supports your intuitive workflow. So there you go: the best way to customize and control your site’s widget areas is even better now. We plan to add some more exciting functionality once custom post types and custom taxonomy development will be fully implemented. Power Widgets 1.6.9 is fully compatible with the latest version of WordPress (3.9).
